Men's Health PD homepage

Men’sHealthPD.com is an informational website about Peyronie’s disease.  As a new interaction designer with Cook, I was asked to redesign the site because it was difficult to navigate preventing users from getting the information they need.

Audience

Regrettably, physicians are among those uninformed of the existence of Peyronie’s disease and its treatments. However, physicians are a difficult target audience. Therefore, this site indirectly targets this group. As stated before, this site’s direct target is consumers, specifically men between the ages of 40 and 60. The intention is to educate consumers and provide them with resources to spread the message to physicians during their visit to the clinic.

User Research

  • Card Sort: Consumers Organizing Disease Information
  • Men’s Health Survey: Understanding Medical Web Use
  • Dr. [Confidential] Interview: Peyronie’s Specialist

Final Design

The Men’s Health PD site is intended to provide awareness to users and further to their physicians. To promote awareness and education, the layout and interactions reflect those of other sites containing patient-focused medical information such as www.webmd.com and www.mayoclinic.com while also providing the opportunity for more rich medical data. Patient information is provided in layman’s terms with the opportunity to read deeper through medical journal articles.

Information is provided in a linear fashion to reflect the process a patient goes through when dealing with a new disease. For instance a patient goes through an education phase, a diagnosis phase, and a treatment phase. Providing information in this flow will best help consumers understand what to expect as well as create an easy to understand flow of information.

Beyond educating consumers, the site provides resources for health care professions as well. The physician section will provide up-to-date medical journal articles, provide information on Cook’s Biodesign®(Surgisis®), and connect physicians to Cook Medical training.

Lessons Learned

Men’s Health PD was my first beginning to end design project in the corporate world.  I encountered things such as company processes, deadline changes, and team members outside of my graduate program.

Similarly to the diaPETic project, I was unable to get direct contact with the user group.  Instead I had to find a way to get the information that would drive my design decisions.  I researched the disease, had dinner with a Urologist who performs the corrective surgery, and conducted a study with a more generalized population.
